Exploring Growth Mindset and Sense of Belonging in the CSU

Fall Convening 2019

Friday, October 25, 2019

California State University, Fullerton

This convening provides an opportunity to explore the concepts of growth mindset and belonging with your colleagues from across the system, with a focus on how these concepts can be used inside and outside of the classroom to support student learning and close equity gaps within the CSU.

Why focus on growth mindset and sense of belonging?

A growing body of literature explores the ways that social emotional supports, including fostering growth mindset and sense of belonging, can potentially help students navigate the transition into college and maintain success across their educational trajectory. These learning mindsets are increasingly popular frames for helping both students and institutions shift their thinking around academic success. This convening will explore the concepts of growth mindset and belonging within a framework of creating motivating academic and nonacademic experiences for all students. The convening will also offer participants an opportunity to mutually engage and determine ways to change institutional policies and practices to support students’ social emotional needs. We will pay particular attention to ways growth mindset and belonging can be used inside and outside of the classroom to support student learning and close equity gaps within the CSU.
