Keynote: Dr. Tressie McMillan Cottom
It has been 70 years since Thurgood Marshall argued, and won, the landmark Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, KS, 1954 (Brown) decision before the United States Supreme Court declaring the “separate, but equal” doctrine illegal. Significant legal challenges have begun to dismantle Brown in some states, and California is not immune. Our state has seen legal challenges to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in both K-12 and higher education.
This webinar begins with a national overview of how we came to our current circumstances by Dr. Tressie McMillan Cottom, noted sociologist and MacArthur Foundation “Genius Grant” fellow, and continues with an examination of equity and DEI in California. The event concludes with insights from everyday middle leaders on what the conversation means for us in our roles, and how we continue the work to overcome our nation’s legacy of educational equity gaps in an especially fraught national moment.
